With the oldest Livery Company believed to be the Worshipful Company of Weavers, receiving a Royal Charter in the 12 th century, I explained how in the 16 th century an order of precedence was established, at the head of which are the ‘Great Twelve’ Livery companies: Mercers, Grocers, Drapers, Fishmongers, Goldsmiths, then Merchant Taylors.
In it appears that Francis Risden senior enrolled his sons Francis (then aged 12 years) and Thomas (10 years of age) into the Merchant Taylors’ School (5). Founded inby the Merchant Taylors’ Company, this early school was located in the Manor of the Rose, in Suffolk Lane in. One map in the Merchant Taylors’ collection breaks this mould, giving an outline plan of the town of Macosquin (see Plate 1), which became the main settlement of the company in Londonderry.
